Syd Mcgregor

Certified Trainer & Performance Specialist

Syd’s love for fitness began at age 12 when their mom took them to a public gym, but it wasn’t until 15 that they truly fell in love with weightlifting. Specializing in performance enhancement, corrective exercise, and functional fitness, Syd helps clients build strength, endurance, and mobility for long-term health. They blend techniques from bodybuilding, powerlifting, and functional training to create personalized programs that deliver real results.

Passionate about community, Syd values the camaraderie and support that fitness brings, drawing from their own journey of overcoming mental health challenges through connection. Outside of training, Syd enjoys running with their dog, skateboarding, cooking, and exploring Austin’s live music scene.

Syd Mcgregor Personal Training Philosophy

I believe that fitness isn’t a luxury, but an essential. To me, the effects of exercise on mental health and living a pain-free mobile life are beyond beneficial for long-term health goals. My goal as a trainer is to help my clients build their health for long-term functionality by improving muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular health so they can do things like play with their grandchildren and walk up the stairs pain-free as they age.

What Sets Me Apart From Other Trainers?

I am a huge advocate for always seeking growth and new knowledge, especially when it comes to learning from others. I have learned from a variety of other trainers to incorporate styles such as bodybuilding, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, and functional-based exercises. My experience from training alongside highly experienced lifters and trainers has grown my knowledge in the fitness industry to properly identify the needs of my clients; pulling from a variety of training styles for maximum growth. As a coach, I’m able to help others skip the years of mistakes and setbacks I made in my own fitness journey by providing the proper guidance needed to achieve real results in a much more ideal amount of time.

What’s My Personal Fitness Story?

I began my fitness journey at age 12 when my mom took me to a public gym for the first time. I was always a very active kid growing up with a love for sports and constantly being on the move. Being so young, the gym never really stuck with me until age 15 when I fell in love with powerlifting and bodybuilding. What once began as a competitive mindset to be stronger than my friends turned into a love for weightlifting in the way that it helped both my mental health and physical health improve tremendously.

As time went on, friends and family began to notice my progress and asked for my help in the gym as well. This began my enjoyment for teaching others how to progress with their own fitness journeys. I then went on to get certified as a personal trainer with the National Federation of Personal Trainers and got started in a commercial gym as soon as I could to gain the experience needed to learn more. As I continued on to grow my knowledge in health and fitness, I found a sense of fulfillment which then inspired me to gain my Performance Enhancement and Corrective Exercise certifications with National Academy of Sports Medicine.

I now have garnered 3 years of full time training experience where I have spent that time learning from other trainers, podcasts, and books to further my knowledge in the field. Starting in Orange County, CA to now training in Austin, TX, I only look forward to continuing on in helping others learn how to find a sense of fulfillment with their own health and fitness goals.

Why is Community Important to Me?

Community is an important component to my life in terms of camaraderie, learning new things, being able to share experiences and opinions with others, and simply enjoying life. My own fitness journey began and continued on due to the friends I made along the way as people to Syd Mcgregor exercise with, compete against, and enjoy time with.

Being in a community is also what’s helped me to overcome many of the mental health issues I have struggled with since I was a pre teen. In the fitness industry especially, I have made friends that have allowed me to open up and have provided me with a support system that has nurtured my self-improvement.

Many of the things I have come to know to this day is because of the communities I have become a part of, and Community Strength Austin is another amazing community where people can come together to prioritize their health, enjoy socializing, and feel free to express themselves.

What Do I Do Outside of Health and Fitness?

When I’m not in the gym, I enjoy my time hanging out and going on runs with my dog, skateboarding when the weather isn’t boiling hot, and going on nature walks. On a more chill day, I enjoy playing guitar, going out for dinner with friends, cooking and baking (I’m a huge foodie), and going to bars to listen to live music.
